The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is a computer-based test that is designed to measure your ability to identify and respond to hazards and developing hazards on the road. You must pass the HPT before you can book the NSW driving test to get your provisional P1 licence. The aim of the HPT is to simply ensure that your hazard awareness skills are at a level to drive solo.
How Does the HPT Work?
Unlike a practical driving test, the HPT is all digital. No steering or pedals involved! You’ll interact with a touchscreen to answer questions based on real-world driving scenarios. The test shows a series of 15 short video clips of typical everyday traffic situations. Before the test actually starts, you will be given 2 practice videos. During each video scenario, your observation skills and decision-making skills are put to the test as you’ll be asked to touch the screen to demonstrate when you would perform actions like overtake, turn at intersections or slow down.

When Can I Book the HPT?
Under 25 – You can book your HPT as soon as you have held your learner licence for at least 10 months. You don’t require any set number of logbook hours. 25 Years & Older – If you’re over the age of 25, you still have to sit and pass the HPT. The same applies, if you have held your learners for at least 10 months you can book the test. Just remember, you have up to 15 months to pass your driving test once you have passed the Hazard Perception Test. If you don’t pass the driving test within that time, you will have to pass the HPT again.
